5000 years of history

About Ridgeway Walks

Ridgeway Walks is a family-owned business that specialises in walks on and around the Ridgeway National Trail. We offer: self-guided walks, guided walks, historical guided tours, accommodation booking, luggage transfers, and home-made lunch and snack packs. We are based in the historical town of Wallingford around the midway point of the trail, and can provide a custom holiday experience to meet your specific requirements and are available for support should you need us.

Ridgeway Walks is run by a qualified archaeologist who has been walking the Ridgeway and various other national trails for many years. Let us share our local knowledge and love of the Ridgeway to give you a holiday to remember!

The Ridgeway – a journey through 5000 years of history!

The Ridgeway National Trail follows an 87 mile ancient trackway from Overton Hill near Avebury in Wiltshire to Ivinghoe Beacon near Tring in Buckinghamshire and has been used by travellers, herdsmen and armies for thousands of years. Along the Ridgeway you will have the opportunity to visit sites and monuments from the Neolithic period, through the Bronze Age and Iron Age, to the Saxon and Medieval periods – a journey through 5000 years of history.

The Ridgeway also takes you through stunning scenery that passes through two designated Areas of Outstanding Natural Beauty (AONB). Starting on the rolling hills of the North Wessex Downs AONB, the trail follows the chalk high-ground before heading down towards the Thames Valley and then on to the Chilterns AONB, where you will finish your walk through sheltered beech woodland. The natural scenery of the Ridgeway is inspiring and beautiful throughout the year.
