The Ridgeway – a journey through 5000 years of history!
The Ridgeway National Trail follows an 87 mile ancient trackway from Overton Hill near Avebury in Wiltshire to Ivinghoe Beacon near Tring in Buckinghamshire and has been used by travellers, herdsmen and armies for thousands of years. Along the Ridgeway you will have the opportunity to visit sites and monuments from the Neolithic period, through the Bronze Age and Iron Age, to the Saxon and Medieval periods – a journey through 5000 years of history.
The Ridgeway also takes you through stunning scenery that passes through two designated Areas of Outstanding Natural Beauty (AONB). Starting on the rolling hills of the North Wessex Downs AONB, the trail follows the chalk high-ground before heading down towards the Thames Valley and then on to the Chilterns AONB, where you will finish your walk through sheltered beech woodland. The natural scenery of the Ridgeway is inspiring and beautiful throughout the year.
The full Ridgeway trail can be completed in 6-8 days and will involve walking between 10-14 miles a day on well marked and sign-posted tracks. If you would prefer to do it in smaller sections, only half the trail at a time, or add rest days we can tailor-make an itinerary for you.
Why not add a days guided walking to your holiday to find out about rich and varied history of the Ridgeway. These days typically involve 5 hours of guided time through the most historical rich areas of the Ridgeway, and are tailor-made for you.
From Europe's largest stone circle, the UNESCO World Heritage Site of Avebury and Europe's largest man made mound Silbury Hill, to Iron Age hill forts and chalk figures, we offer guided tours of the best bits of the Ridgeway and surrounding area.
